Almshouses and courtyards

Groningen is known for its many hospices. In the Middle Ages, these institutions were founded for taking care of the sick and elderly and to accommodate pilgrims. Later, the term ‘Almshouses’ was introduced: a group of houses around an inner courtyard or square. Guides take participants to these tranquil places in the city centre, and to various churches such as the Martini church, the der Aa church and the St. Jozef cathedral.
