The large division
This sculpture was created by Pierluca Degli Innocenti, an artist of Italian origin and who lived in France from 1960, which was at that time was divided by the tragedy of the Algerian war. His dismay about this can be clearly recognised in this sculpture, which consists of a large lump of bronze ripped open as by a giant internal explosion.
‘De grote verscheuring’ (the great tearing apart by war) is part of a series of sculptures and is a copy of an aluminium specimen that was on display in 1965 in a Keukenhof exhibition where it was bought by the Vindicat Atque Polit student union. They presented the sculpture to the city of Groningen on the occasion of their 150th anniversary.
