Galgal Hamazalot

Galgal Hamazalot

It’s too easy to miss this work by Joseph Semah because it can be seen only when you look at the paving bricks.

The artist created eleven bronze moon shapes in the Folkingestraat paving: a lunar cycle from full moon to new moon. When the shapes are joined together, an eye becomes visible with the moon as its pupil.

The Hebrew word for moon is eye and is connected to the number eleven because in Hebrew numbers are coupled with words.

For Semah the lunar cycle is a metaphor for the life cycle and the cycles of which history and the future are made.
