Veenkoloniaal Museum

The Veenkoloniaal Museum (Peat District Museum) in Veendam tells the fascinating story of the Groningen peat colonies. Topics include peat extraction and peat diggers, the hundreds of inland vessels in dozens of kilometres of channels, the rich industry of starch and strawboard and the many souvenirs brought back by sailors, such as porcelain dog figurines.

Menkemaborg

The Menkemaborg in Uithuizen provides a tangible idea of how Groningen nobility lived in the 17th and 18th century. The interior of this house – which was a stone house in the 14th century – has remained unchanged, but through the years the Groningen estate house developed into its current Baroque magnificence. The gardens between the moats also provide an idea of how things were during the 18th century.
